Yep, it's nearing national eat an eel day in Japan, which has something to do with summer. Apparently it was an Edo period tradition to eat eel during the hot Japanese summers, because the high calorie/fat content gave you energy to do more than sit in front of the internet cruising for epic lulz.
Eel is called unagi--you may have had it. In America, it's usually found on sushi. The stuff is as expensive as steak, so it's not eaten too often, as I understand it. Anyway, we had Unagi fillets (?) on a bed of rice tonight, and it was pretty delicious. Unfortunately, I don't feel energetic. Just fat and hot.
This is what a scrumptious pile o' unagi looks like:

Unagi is my favourite! I am jealous!
did you manage to consume any of the rice, or was this a more daunting prospect than the eel?
no, the rice just tasted like rice. It wasn't the alien flavor explosion you're envisioning. Actually, neither is Unagi--it tastes like a really rich salmon in regards to texture, but with a different flavor. Go try it.
sort of like thick slices of tender/fatty bacon with a teriyaki barbeque sauce.
hey, I think you're onto something now...start up an import company, bring in unagi, brand it as "japanese bacon," and watch the money roll in.
better yet, figure out out to sell bacon in Japan as eel....
And when people asked why it tasted so weird and tough, we could just say it's Chinese eel. Then people would give you a knowing nod and continue to buy it, while disparaging it publicly at every opportunity.
